"A national ban on abortions will not happen while I am president," the US president said. According to him, if someone comes up with such an initiative, he will veto it.
He also added that the fastest way to restore the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling would be to adopt a new law.
Earlier, the American leader decided to sign a decree on women's access to reproductive care, including abortions and contraception. The White House said that "the only way to ensure a woman's right to choose is to restore Roe's protection as a federal law by Congress."
In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the state could not prevent a woman from having an abortion until the fetus became viable. The reason was the appeal of Jane Rowe (pseudonym of Norma McCorvey). She claimed to have been raped. Then in Texas, where she lived, abortions were banned.
